MATLAB is a professional computing environment developed by MathWorks. Before you can begin using it, you must install MATLAB on your computer using a licensed MathWorks account.
The current version of MATLAB is R2025b. The steps below describe a typical installation process. Screens and options may vary slightly depending on your operating system.
  1. Click β€œSign In” in the top-right corner.
  2. If you do not already have an account, create one using your VMI email address.
  3. After signing in, click β€œMATLAB” and then β€œInstall MATLAB”.
  4. Select your operating system from the dropdown menu.
  5. Download and launch the installer.
  6. When prompted, sign in using the same MathWorks account.
  7. Accept the license agreement.
  8. Select the VMI-issued license when it appears.
  9. Use the default installation location and pre-selected products unless instructed otherwise.
  10. Choose whether to create desktop shortcuts and allow data collection.
  11. Click β€œBegin Install” and wait for the installation to complete.
Once installation is complete, you should be able to launch MATLAB from your applications menu or desktop shortcut. The first launch may ask you to sign in again to verify your license.
Once MATLAB is installed, you are ready to explore the MATLAB Desktop and begin working interactively. In the next section, you will see the panels that make up the desktop layout.
